I-5 Rose Quarter Full Closure Coming September 11 — ODOT Crews to Work Around the Clock for Five Weeks

All southbound lanes of Interstate 5 through Portland’s Rose Quarter will close around the clock for up to five weeks beginning September 11, as ODOT construction crews work 24 hours a day to replace concrete surfacing last installed in 1985 on a deteriorated elevated 2-mile stretch south of the Moda Center — with congestion expected to extend into Vancouver during peak commutes. Before that major closure, WSDOT will first conduct a 14-hour overnight closure of all northbound and southbound I-5 lanes on July 11-12 to install a new overhead sign structure near the Oregon Convention Center. ODOT says the full five-week closure approach is faster, safer, and less costly than extended partial closures — and urges drivers to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, shift travel schedules, use public transit, or work remotely where possible during the closure window. For contractors with active projects in the Portland metro, this is a critical scheduling note — material deliveries, subcontractor mobilizations, and equipment moves across the I-5 corridor through the Rose Quarter will require careful coordination beginning September 11.
