It’s Official — Oregon Governor Signs $600M Moda Center Renovation Into Law, Groundbreaking Set for Summer 2027

Governor Tina Kotek signed Senate Bill 1501 on April 27, 2026, committing $365 million in state funding toward renovating the Moda Center and creating joint ownership of the arena between the city of Portland and the state of Oregon — the largest public investment in a sports and entertainment venue in Oregon history. The signing kicks off the process of asking new Trail Blazers owner Tom Dundon to sign a 20-year lease to keep the team in Portland, with the state commitment contingent on Portland contributing $120 million and Multnomah County contributing $88 million — bringing the total public investment to over $573 million toward the estimated $600 million renovation. Documents show groundbreaking is targeted for as soon as summer 2027, with a goal of completion by 2030 — in time for Portland to host the NCAA Women’s Final Four. For commercial contractors in the Portland metro, particularly those in interior construction, mechanical, electrical, and specialty trades, this project represents one of the most significant privately occupied construction opportunities to come to market in decades.
