North Spokane Corridor Enters New Phase — Elevated Highway Foundations Now Under Construction, 9.5 Miles Open by Late 2028
The North Spokane Corridor — Washington’s 10.5-mile north/south limited access highway connecting I-90 on the south end to US 2 and US 395 on the north — is entering a significant new construction phase in 2026, with Spokane-based Max J. Kuney Co. currently building drilled shafts, rebar, and bridge pier foundations to support a divided, elevated four-lane highway section through Stage 3, running from Sprague Avenue to the Spokane River. Stage 4, running from Mission Avenue over Trent Avenue south to Alki Avenue, was expected to begin in July 2026 — bringing the total active construction to two simultaneous stages — with Stage 4 including a new half interchange at Trent Avenue and a roundabout, and opening 2.5 additional miles of drivable corridor when the interchange work completes in late 2028. With seven miles already complete and only 3.5 miles remaining, the North Spokane Corridor is finally approaching completion after decades of planning and phased construction — and when it opens fully, it will dramatically improve freight movement between I-90 and the US 395/US 2 corridor in Eastern Washington. For civil and bridge contractors in the Inland Northwest, the remaining construction phases represent continued opportunity well into 2028.
