Oregon’s New Energy Code Requires Heat Pumps in New Homes — What Contractors Need to Know

The Oregon Building Code Division’s Residential and Manufactured Structures Board approved updates to the state’s residential energy code, now incorporated into the 2026 Oregon Residential Specialty Code. Heat pumps will serve as the first stage of heating in new homes, while natural gas may still be used for supplemental heating — a provision designed to reduce strain on the electrical grid during peak demand. An analysis projected savings of an average of $125 per month, or more than $1,500 per year, on energy bills for residents. The full code is anticipated for adoption October 1, 2026 — residential contractors should begin preparing now. Contracting BusinessContracting Business
