Portland’s Bull Run Water Filtration Project Is in Full Swing — 350+ Workers on Site, Completion Target 2029
Portland’s massive Bull Run Filtration Project — required under federal and state safe drinking water regulations to remove the disease-causing microorganism Cryptosporidium from the water supply that serves roughly 840,000 people — is in active, full-scale construction with more than 350 craftworkers on site daily and multiple concurrent work fronts underway simultaneously. The project involves construction of a new filtration facility on a 95-acre site capable of filtering up to 135 million gallons per day, plus new raw water pipelines connecting via underground tunnel to existing conduits at Lusted Road, and finished water pipelines — nearly 10,000 linear feet — installed along Dodge Park Boulevard and into the distribution system. Construction is proceeding through the summer with ongoing road restrictions on Lusted Road through mid-October 2026, and the project remains on track for delivery of filtered Bull Run water in 2029, with a contingency window through the end of that year for weather-related delays. For civil, underground utility, tunneling, and mechanical contractors in the Portland metro, the Bull Run Filtration Project represents one of the most significant active public works construction programs in the region — community meetings continue quarterly, with the next one scheduled July 9.
