Seattle’s I-5 Ship Canal Bridge Gets Major Preservation Work — 240,000 Drivers Per Day Affected Through 2026

The Washington State Department of Transportation’s “Revive I-5” project is well underway in Seattle, with contractor Guy F. Atkinson working to repair and resurface the deck of the I-5 Ship Canal Bridge — a structure that carries nearly 240,000 vehicles per day and hadn’t seen a major preservation effort in 40 years. Northbound I-5 across the bridge was reduced to two lanes beginning in January, with WSDOT conducting emergency weekend closures to set up and remove work zones; all lanes will temporarily reopen for the FIFA World Cup games in Seattle from June 8–July 10. After the World Cup pause, two right lanes of northbound I-5 will close again from mid-July through the end of 2026, when work will wrap with a final full weekend closure. Southbound lane reductions on the same bridge are planned to follow in 2027, so NW contractors bidding any Seattle-area work should factor extended site access disruptions into their scheduling.
