SR 167 Port of Tacoma Expressway Stage 2 Opening in September — Stage 4 Construction Begins This Month
The SR 167 Completion Project is hitting multiple milestones simultaneously in July 2026 — Stage 2, which builds the expressway between I-5 and the Port of Tacoma, is scheduled to open to traffic in September, while Stage 4 — the final segment connecting N. Meridian Avenue to I-5 in Fife — is scheduled to begin construction this month, closing out the full six-mile project build sequence. The entire SR 167 Completion Project — part of WSDOT’s $2.83 billion Puget Sound Gateway Program — is planned for completion by 2030, with each stage delivering incremental freight and commuter improvements to one of the most congested corridors in the Pacific Northwest. Stage 1 is already complete, having delivered the Wapato Way bridge and SR 99 roundabout in Fife, and Stage 3 between SR 161 and SR 410 is currently underway. WSDOT has also been conducting bridge work on I-5 and SR 99 in Fife in late June and early July, with multiple nightly lane closures — for contractors coordinating freight movements to and from the Port of Tacoma, this summer represents the peak of construction disruption before the new corridor opens.
