Washington Awards $475,000 to Speed Up Housing Permits, Including $70,000 for Ridgefield
The Washington State Department of Commerce announced $475,000 in grants to eight local governments to speed up review of residential building permits, with the city of Ridgefield receiving $70,000. Other recipients included the cities of Tacoma, Bellevue, Lacey, Tumwater, and Yakima, along with Pierce County and the Snohomish County Health Department.
The grants fund new permitting software, digital application systems, and AI tools that check whether an application is complete before submission. Lacey’s director of community and economic development, Vanessa Dolbee, said one in four residential permit applications currently arrives incomplete, inspection scheduling still runs on voicemail, and permit records are scattered across paper files and multiple systems in some jurisdictions. Ridgefield will work with a software vendor to identify and implement improvements. The grants are part of Commerce’s broader Washington Accelerator for Residential Production initiative, which is developing state guidance and recommendations to reduce costs and shorten permitting timelines statewide, including pre-approved, permit-ready home designs.
Why this matters for contractors: Faster, more predictable permit review directly affects project timelines and financing costs for residential builders. Contractors working in Ridgefield, Tacoma, Bellevue, Lacey, Tumwater, or Yakima should expect permitting process changes to roll out over the coming months as these jurisdictions implement new software and AI-assisted intake tools.
