Washington DOSH Tower Crane Permit Requirement Now in Effect for 2026

Beginning January 1, 2026, Washington prime contractors must obtain a tower crane permit from DOSH prior to the operation, assembly, disassembly, or reconfiguration of a tower crane on any construction site — a significant new compliance requirement for larger residential and mixed-use construction projects across Washington state. For tower cranes already in operation before January 1, 2026, prime contractors must apply for permits retroactively, and any citations regarding tower cranes may only be issued by L&I Crane Safety Inspectors, making early compliance outreach to L&I strongly advisable for any contractor currently operating tower cranes on Washington jobsites.
